Mother to Son by Langston Hughes In this poem, by Langston Hughes, the speaker is an African-American woman who addresses her son. The speaker, a mother, tells her son about her life and the difficulties and obstacles that she has had to face along the way. She begins with a reference to a ‘crystal stair’ which represents the lives of rich white people around her. She then describes her life’s journey as a broken wooden staircase full of broken boards, tacks and splinters, which has been difficult to climb. This is a metaphor for the problems that she might have faced as an African-American woman, such as poverty and racial inequality. In the end, she reminds her son that he must never give up. She encourages her son to move on despite difficulties that he may face. The speaker stands for the hope and strength in the face of injustice and oppression. Fearless and Faithful (Summary Only For Reading) This story is about a hardworking, good natured and brave girl who went on to play a significant role in India’s freedom struggle. Nicknamed Jhalakari, because she killed a leopard with nothing more than a stick, she moves to Jhansi after marrying a soldier in the army of Rani Lakshmibai. The Rani is impressed by her frank and fearless nature and chooses her to be her companion. The two become great friends.  During this time, the British are trying to take control of India. in 1857, many Indians rebel against British rule. The following year, the British attack Jhansi but the soldiers fight back bravely, led by Rani Lakshmibai. Jhalakari herself takes part in the attack.
