Class 6: Unit-2: The Goal An extract from Keeper by Mal Peet

The Goal An extract from Keeper by Mal Peet (Summary Only For Reading)

It is the story of a boy who lives in a small village in the Amazon rainforest. One day, he sees a strange figure of a goalkeeper dressed in football clothes from an earlier time standing near an ancient football goalpost in a clearing in the forest. He plays with the mysterious Keeper but doesn’t save a single shot. Yet, he returns the next day for more lessons. This time, the Keeper decides to teach him in a most unusual way. He asks the boy what he sees. The confused boy answers that he can see the forest, the goal and the net. Then, the Keeper tells him to look harder at the crossbar. There, he spots a small brownish blur. Now the speaker is instructed to look up and he sees a hawk. The Keeper then helps him to see from the point of view of the hawk. As soon as he does so, the speaker realises that the Keeper is trying to teach him to focus. Just like the hawk focuses on its prey and can see intently, so too, must the speaker observe the ball if he is to save it from the net. Then the Keeper decides to test him. He kicks the ball and as it curves past, the boy feels that he knows exactly where it is going. This focussed vision helps him save the goal and thus, the Keeper is pleased that he has learned his lesson.

The story uses rich descriptive language which helps us visualise the characters and the situation very clearly. In the text, we see that the Keeper is trying to teach the boy a lesson— to focus on his goal in order to achieve it. This lesson is taught to the boy and therefore the reader in a very interesting and effective way. While the boy learns how to focus, the writer’s language helps the reader visualise exactly what the boy sees and this helps us also learn this lesson well.
