While spending time on the tree, waiting for rescue boats to arrive, the Shompen boy makes use of the knife that was tucked in his belt and carves a hole in one of the branches. He uses his precious fire stone to kindle a fire that not only sends a stream of black smoke skywards but also rids them of the mosquitos.

Soon rescue boats arrive with two men calling the two boys to jump on to a canoe. The Shompen boy and the island boy leap down from the tree. When the boat with the rescuers and the two young boys comes within ten metres of the shore, the Shompen boy suddenly jumps from the canoe on to the shore. He then looks at the island boy and pats his right thigh. On seeing the Shompen boy, the island boy too pats his own thigh and feels his money pouch which the Shompen boy had previously taken and had kept back without him feeling anything.
