 Summary: Avani and the Pea Plant One morning, when Avani is passing a bowl of peas to her mother in the kitchen, one pea falls from the bowl unnoticed by anyone. A series of coincidences lead the pea to fall into a hole in the garden. It stays there till suitable conditions help it turn into a sapling. When Avani and her mother see it, they are surprised and wonder who planted it. The story cleverly introduces the students to the concept of germination. It can be the starting point of learning about different kinds of plants, and how and where they grow.  Summary: Over in the Meadow Over in the Meadow is a poem by Olive A Wadsworth, the pseudonym of Katherine Floyd Dana. She adopted the nom de plume of a man because in the 1800’s, when the poem was written, society frowned upon women writers. Over in the Meadow remains one of her most well-loved poems. In this poem, she describes a meadow which is full of different animals, birds and insects. She also describes their homes and their actions. This popular poem originally has ten stanzas and it is used as a counting rhyme to teach children to count from one to ten. Here, three stanzas have been chosen (the third one has been modified for easy understanding). The students can be encouraged to read the full poem for pleasure and knowledge.  Summary: That’s What Friends Are For This story revolves around an elephant named Theodore. Theodore has hurt his leg and cannot move. Hence, he is unable to walk to the end of the forest to meet his cousin. His friend, the bird, advises him to fly to his cousin. The lion tells Theodore to roar loudly and summon his cousin. Theodore thanks them for their advice but says he can neither fly nor roar. Just then, a wise opossum suggests that some friends could go to the end of the forest and bring Theodore’s cousin to him. The animals do just that and bring the cousin to Theodore. Theodore thanks them profusely and they all have a merry time. This simple story carries the powerful message of friendship and also suggests that sometimes action is better than advice.
