 Summary: When Grandma Comes

This poem is about the fun and happiness the grandma brings with her whenever

she comes visiting. Each of the three stanzas lists the different gifts she brings for

everyone. She has a gift for everyone. She brings toys, something for the kitchen,

for the garden and even some fish for the cat.

In the second stanza the speaker talks of the many ways in which the grandma

spends time with her, plays with her and looks after her.

The poem ends by saying that whenever grandma coming visiting, there is much

gaiety as the parents are happy and even the pets look forward to spending time

with her. The whole house springs into enjoyment every Saturday when grandma

comes visiting.

A. 1. Grandma brings a puppy toy, yellow thread, gingerbread, homemade soup, a knitted hat, a can of

tuna, woollen socks, chocolate cherries, a picture book, a string of beads, and pumpkin seeds.

2. Grandma and grandchild enjoy their time together. Grandma sings for the grandchild, brushes her

hair, pushes her on the backyard swing, rocks her, dances with her, reads to her, takes her to the

candy store, feeds her and even puts her to bed at night.

3. Everybody is happy when Grandma comes. The speaker’s parents grin, the puppy barks, the cat

meows, and the speaker laughs and spins.

B. Grandma is a loving person. This is shown by the lines that say she brings food and presents

when she comes and also when she reads to the speaker, brushes her hair, walks with her to the

candy store, feeds her and tucks her into bed at night. We know that everybody is happy when

Grandma comes. The speaker says she laughs, her parents smile and even the dog and cat seem to

celebrate.
