Raintree 4 Adventure in the Andamans

 Summary: Adventure in the Andamans

In the story “Adventure in the Andamans”, Manav is a young boy who is

holidaying with his parents in the Andamans Islands. One day, he sets out

snorkelling and exploring the waters near the shore. Just then, he feels

someone touch his shoulder. It is a tiny turtle! Manav and the turtle, whom he

names Tiny, immediately become friends. Tiny and Manav swim together

through shoals of fish and eels, and Manav even meets Tiny’s family. Tiny,

however, gets caught in a fishing net, with the fishing hook piercing one of its

legs. When Manav sees Tiny twisting and turning, trying to be free, he

immediately decides to help. Manav asks Tiny to trust him; he then gently pulls

out the hook from the turtle’s leg, and gathers up the net so that no other sea

creature gets stuck in it.

Soon after that, Manav comes up for air, and realises that he is too far from

the shore, and too tired to swim back. He tells Tiny that he cannot swim back.

Just then he finds a huge turtle slide beneath him. Manav holds the edge of the

turtle’s shell, and the turtle and Manav both begin to move through the water

easily. Soon he reaches the shallow end of the shore and spots his worried

parents on the beach. Manav stands up and gives one last smile to Tiny.

Although that is the last time he ever sees Tiny, Manav considers it the best

day of his life. He tries to tell his parents what happened but nobody believes

him.

The story is narrated in the first person by a young boy who loves to swim and

explore the underwater world. As the narrator is a young boy, nobody believes

his adventurous story. The beauty of the story is that it is up to the reader to

read it as a fantasy or a real adventure.

UNIT 3: ADVENTURE IN THE ANDAMANS

Embedded questions

1. (free response)

2. (free response)

3. When Manav says that his mother called out to him to be careful ‘as usual’, it’s because he went

swimming in the ocean on his own quite often. And his mother always reminded him to be careful

because the ocean can be a dangerous place too.

4. (Suggested answer. Accept all logical answers.)

Manav’s hands and feet feel like they were made of iron. This means that he was so tired that it

took a lot of effort to move his hands and feet, as if they had become as heavy as iron.

5. (Suggested answer. Accept all logical answers.)

I think the ‘huge turtle’ that helped Manav belonged to Tiny’s family.

Comprehension

A. 1. The words like “I loved the beach” and “the ocean was home to me” prove that Manav was

comfortable in the ocean. He floats, he glides, he swims; he enjoys being in the water.

2. As Manav was enjoying himself in the ocean one morning, a tiny turtle, whom Manav named ‘Tiny’,

touched him on the shoulder. They seemed to have a connection with each other, and became

friends instantly.

3. Manav was in a hurry to get to the beach next morning because he wanted to meet his new friend

Tiny the turtle again.

4. During his magical journey with Tiny, Manav saw giant coral reefs, slimy eels, thousands of starfish

resting on a rock, and Tiny’s family of turtles.

5. Manav calls it the ‘best day of his life’ because he had extraordinary experiences that day. He

explored the amazing life underwater and made new friends!

B. 1. a. The speaker is Manav, and Tiny is a small turtle Manav met during one of his swims in the

ocean.

b. Both Tiny and Manav were in the ocean in the Andaman Islands.

c. Manav nearly choked out of fear and concern, because he saw Tiny caught in a fishing net,

twisting and turning trying to free itself.

2. a. Manav is the speaker here.

b. Manav gently held a giant turtle’s shell, and rode it to safety. This is the ride that he would never

forget.

c. Manav would never forget that ride because it saved his life. He was too far out in the ocean,

and too tired to swim back. That’s when the turtle supported him under the water and slowly

helped him back to the shore.

3. Manav and Tiny ended up helping each other. When Tiny got stuck in a fishing net, with a hook

planted in one of its legs, Manav helped it by removing the hook and the net. When Manav was in

danger of drowning because of tiredness, one of the turtles from Tiny’s family helped him reach

the shore safely. Tiny kept him company until Manav reached the beach.

4. (Suggested answer. Accept all logical answers.) Manav thinks that nobody would believe his story

because they would find it hard to believe that a turtle immediately became friends with him, and

showed him beautiful views of the ocean.

C. 1. (Suggested answer. Accept all logical answers.) I think the net came from the fishing tankers or the

fishing boats. When people fish in the ocean, often the net falls away or gets torn off. Lot of animals

apart of fish get caught in these nets and die.

2. (Suggested answer. Accept all logical answers.) Manav is a young boy who loves swimming

and exploring the ocean world. He is also very kind towards animals, and cares about them

deeply. When Tiny the turtle gets caught in the fishing net, he not only frees it from the net,

but he also gathers it up and takes it back to the shore, so that no other sea animals get

caught in it.
