Summary: How the Little Kite Learned to Fly
This poem uses the story of two kites to give an important message. The
poem tells us about a little kite who does not try to fly because he is afraid
of falling down. A big kite tells him that unless he tries, he will never learn.
Finally, the big kite flies off. Seeing him, the little kite too, wants to fly, so he
overcomes his fear and starts flying. Soon, he flies steadily and proudly and
enjoys being so high up in the air. He is glad that he had the courage to try,
otherwise he would have missed all the fun.
Through this simple story, the poem shows us how important it is to have
the courage to try new things. It is natural to be afraid of failing when one is
young and inexperienced, but we have to overcome that fear. If we do not
try something just because we are too nervous, then we may miss the
happiness and excitement of doing something lovely. Also, we may never
know how good we can be at it.
The poem poses a problem (a kite is so afraid of falling that it cannot fly)
and then offers a solution (when it is brave enough to try, it overcomes its
fear and loves the experience of flying). By giving voices to the two kites,
and making them have feelings like fear, excitement and pride, the poet
treats them like human beings. The little kite symbolises those people who
are too afraid of failure to try new things. The big kite stands for those who
encourage and guide us, and set examples for us to follow. The poet
describes cleverly how the little kite’s feelings change from nervousness to
confidence. She also creates a beautiful imagery of how it must feel like to
float high up in the air. Every consecutive two lines of the poem rhyme.

Suggested answer (accept any logical answer): They may have seen other kites up in the sky, or a
rainbow. Down on the ground, they could have seen houses and fields and trees.
B. Suggested answer (accept any logical answer):
There could be two reasons why the big kite flew off although he wanted to help the little kite. Firstly,
he wanted to fly himself, and he was tired of trying to make the little kite fly. Also, he knew that once
he started flying, watching him would help the little kite get over his fear of falling. It would show him
how lovely it was to fly, and it would give him the courage to try flying.

HOW THE LITTLE KITE LEARNED TO FLY POEM
A. Answer in brief.
Why was the little kite hesitant to fly?
Ans: The little kite looked at all the other kites flying high up in the sky and got nervous. Since this
was the first time he was trying to fly he thought he would fall down. It was difficult to make the little
kite realise that it was possible to fly.
B. Answer in detail.
What made the little kite take the first step into flying?
Ans: The big kite first tried its best to make the little kite confident. But he did not succeed. So the
big kite ignored the little kite’s words and flew away swiftly towards the tranquil sky, leaving the little
kite alone. The little kite shuddered with fright at the sight of the big kite flying into the sky. Then, not
wanting to be alone, he took the first effort to fly. He shook himself free for the flight and began to fly.
Once he rose up through the air alone, he slowly became confident and was thrilled to fly with the
big kite by his side.
C. Read the lines and answer the questions.
1. I know I should fall if I tried to fly. (How the little kite learned to fly)
a. Who says the above line?
b. Why does he say this?
c. Was he right in thinking so? Did he really fall?
Ans: a. The little kite says the above lines to the big kite.
b. When the little kite looked at the other kites flying high over his head he felt nervous
and remarked so.
c. No, the little kite was not right in thinking that he will fall even without trying. Finally, he
did not fall.
2. Then how the little kite thrilled with pride,
As he sailed with the big kite, side by side!
a. Why was the little kite thrilled?
b. Where was he?
c. Who else was there with him?
Ans: a. The little kite was thrilled because he finally started flying.
b. He was in the sky flying with the big kite.
c. He had the big kite flying by his side and other birds and clouds also gave him company
in the sky.
D. Answer in detail. (Think and answer)
The little kite’s most proud moment was when it could fly high up in the sky with the big kite flying
by his side. What do you understand by this?
Ans: The little kite was greatly thrilled to fly. So far he thought that flying was a distant dream. He had
to gather a lot of courage and determination to do this. What he thought was an impossible task for
him became an easy one once he took that difficult first step. He was brave to overcome his fear and
try. And to fly along with the big kite made him very proud. From this we understand that to achieve
something, we must try very hard. We should also have no fear in us.
